BANTAM

: Veteran of the Month services will be conducted at 10 a.m. by American Legion Tyler-Seward-Kubish Post 44 at the All Wars Memorial on Route 202. Korean War veteran Staff Sergeant Malcolm Ford, Jr. will be honored as the December 2002 Veteran of the Month. A special observance will also be offered to those who gave their lives in the December 7, 1941 sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, with special recognition offered to Post 44 members Army Sergeant Gino Gasparelli and Army Sergeant Harry Mendelsohn, who are both survivors of the attack. : State Representative Richard F. Ferrari holds office hours from 10-11 a.m. in the meeting room at Granby Town Hall. Residents of the 62nd District will have an opportunity to meet with Representative Ferrari and discuss issues of importance. For more info call 800-842-1423.

GRANBY

: Valley Brook Community Church presents a Live Nativity from 5-8 p.m. at Salmon Brook Park on Route 10. This representation of the manger scene of the birth of Jesus Christ uses real animals and actors. Visitors are welcome to walk through the life-size nativity, pet the animals, and ponder the meaning of the season. There will also be free refreshments, hot drinks and Christmas caroling, which visitors are invited to join. LITCHFIELD

: League of Women Voters co-sponsors a workshop on Litchfield’s Vision Plan led by Planning and Zoning Commission members Katherine Davis and Victoria Claman at 9:30 a.m. The Planning and Zoning Commission has contacted the League of Women Voters, along with other civic organizations, boards and commissions, to review the town’s Vision Plan to note whether or not particular recommendations have been completed, require an update, or are no longer relevant. By law, the Vision Plan must be updated every ten years. League members and the Litchfield community are invited to make their voices heard in this important process of planned stewardship of their hometown. The economic, cultural and environmental planning and zoning of Litchfield is a major challenge and one that demands every citizen’s attention. NEW HARTFORD

: Thomaston Methodist Church holds a Roast Beef Dinner from 5-7 p.m. Menu includes mashed potatoes with gravy, garlic green beans, corn, carrots, homemade rolls, assorted beverages, and pie ala mode for dessert. Cost is $8 adults, $7 seniors, $5 children (12 and under).

TORRINGTON

: Concordia Lodge #20 Sons of Italy, 34 Center St. holds early bingo at 1 p.m. and regular bingo at 2 p.m., with progressive jackpot and refreshments. Doors open at 11 a.m.

 

Sunday, December 8

AVON

: Valley Community Baptist Church, 590 West Avon Rd. celebrates the Hanging of the Greens with a festive evening of worship and song at 7 p.m.; a reception with dessert and punch will begin at 6 p.m. The Hanging of the Greens will feature Christmas carols, an uplifting message from Pastor Jay Abramson, and the newly composed cantata "Morning Star" by Joseph Martin. WINCHESTER CENTER

: Baked Chicken Dinner served family style at Winchester Grange Hall on the Green from noon-1 p.m. The public is invited; admission is $7 adults, $3.50 children (12 and under). Reservations required; call 379-3557 or 626-0326. Take-out dinners are also available. This is also the day the Grange holds its Holiday Toy and Food Collection; donations of unwrapped toys for children of all ages and non-perishable food items will be given to area food banks and shelters for the holidays.

: Simsbury Woman’s Club holds its annual Holiday Luncheon at the Farmington Club; social hour starts at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch at 12:30 p.m. Pianist David Garrido will play Christmas selections. Co-chairs of the event are Laurie Childers, Gracie LeFevre and Andy Schaedel. As in previous years, the generosity of club members have made it possible for the club to provide Christmas gifts of clothing, toys and food to a Simsbury family. : Green Woods Chapter, DAR honors the senior class designees for its annual Good Citizen Awards at 2 p.m. at the Beardsley & Memorial Library, 40 Munro Place. This is a prestigious award for students with high scholastic ability and a record of service to school and community. Interested visitors as well as parents and counselors of designees are invited to attend. Since the Chapter’s November meeting was postponed, members are asked to bring comfort items for veterans at the Rocky Hill VA Hospital at this time.
