Heartened by Voices of Contrary Opinion
     I was pleasantly surprised to recently discover The Voice online. I am a Meriden native and spent four wonderful years in Winsted between 1974 and 1978 as a student, and then as a member of the faculty (and sign language interpreter) at Northwestern CT Community College.

Thanks for the Inspiration
     I'm writing to thank Mr. Michael Moskaluk for his article "Gathering Nature's Autumnal Bounty" featured in The Voice last November. My 9-year-old son and I ran across the article while perusing the Internet in search of information about the native American chestnut for his third grade classroom assignment.

Bush Is to Blame
     Let’s blame President Bush! It must be his fault that the runaway increase of the U.S. trade deficit in the 1990s is finally starting to lose people jobs and depress the smoke and mirrors stock market. (And it really should get much worse.)

     There are several recent Voice articles I could respond to, like "Welcome to Act II" [by Lorraine Stone, November 22] and "Was It Right or Wrong" [by Harry Scapin, November 22]. My response is to point to the basic problem, not the symptoms.

     Wasn't it inspiring to read and hear of Governor John Rowland traveling around just before the election, promising all kinds of special grants to all kinds of causes throughout the state, even as we wondered about his authority for this give-away program and where the money was to come from?

     At this season of the year—a time of thankfulness, good will and remembrance—the residents of The Glen want the Town of Winchester to know how much the various services were appreciated during the power outage.

Thanks to Our Great Neighbors
     We were hard hit by the recent ice storm, with power out, trees down along with telephone and cable lines, and debris clogging the dead-end street we live on, restricting travel and access.

     This past Thanksgiving Day, I had the opportunity to be part of the Goshen Turkey Trot. What a wonderful way to start out the holiday! The Goshen Running Club should be applauded for the hard work they put into this event.
