Heartened by Voices of Contrary Opinion

Heartened by Voices of Contrary Opinion By Keith Cowing, Reston, VA

I was pleasantly surprised to recently discover The Voice online. I am a Meriden native and spent four wonderful years in Winsted between 1974 and 1978 as a student, and then as a member of the faculty (and sign language interpreter) at Northwestern CT Community College. At the time Winsted was at the edge of the fading, post-Vietnam counter-culture. Getting Off, with its used jeans, incense, pipes and other quaint items, was its spiritual and cultural headquarters. Local boy Ralph Nader's father was its occasional prophet. Toby Moffett was our Congressman. Highland Lake and its cottages, which we all rented, and the surrounding countryside were our source of grounding. We didn't know any better back then than to be "green"—for green was all around us.

I have to say that I am heartened to see that voices of contrary opinion are still active—and welcome—in northwestern Connecticut.
