Music for a Change

presents RANI ARBO AND DAISY MAYHEM on Friday, December 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wilde Auditorium of the Harry Jack Gray Center at the University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Ave. in West Hartford. Rani Arbo, a vocalist and fiddler, works alongside singing partner Andrew Kinsey, who plays banjo, penny whistle, ukulele and bass. The newest member of the band, Anand Nayak, contributes to daisy mayhem with his flexible voice and superior guitar skills. Scott Kessel adds his dexterity and his Drumship Enterprise, a recycled drum kit featuring a cardboard box, cat food tins, a Danish butter cookie tin and suitcase. Farmington Valley Chorale

sings "MESSA DI GLORIA" on Friday, December 13 at 8 p.m. at Valley Community Baptist Church, 590 West Avon Rd. in Avon. "Messa di Gloria" is a little-known work by Giacomo Puccini, who wrote Madame Butterfly and other famous operas. , Route 47 in Washington presents the annual CHRISTMAS CANDLELIGHT CONCERTS by the St. John’s Chorale on Friday, December 13 at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, December 15 at 4 p.m. William Byrd’s "Mass for Three Voices" will be used as the framework for music of the season, from 16th century to contemporary. Called "one of the best small choruses around" by local music critic Frank Merkling, the Chorale is an auditioned group with members from several local towns, performing under the direction of Mark R. Hartford Community Dance

Hartford Symphony Orchestra

CT Choral Artists

David Westfall, renowned area pianist and organist, will accompany CONCORA. Drama and Comedy

Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts

presents a staged reading of "BOX" on Friday and Saturday, December 13-14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theater on the Learning Corridor campus, 359 Washington St. in Hartford. "Box" is inspired by "The Narrative of the Life of Henry Box Brown," an autobiographical work published in 1851. Henry Brown, a Virginia slave, constructed a wooden box, sealed himself inside and mailed himself by Overland Express to freedom in Philadelphia. Acts Factory Players

Anne Nelson’s play grew out of her experience helping a fire captain compose eulogies for the members of his department who did not return. , 233 Pearl St. in Hartford presents "DINNER WITH FRIENDS" through December 22, with performances on Tuesday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Gabe and Karen, Beth and Tom are two Connecticut couples who have also been best friends for as long as any of them can remember. Married for 12 years, they planned on eating, drinking and parenting their way into old age together. But when Gabe and Karen host a dinner to try out some new recipes on their best friends, only one arrives bearing news that will test their friendship and even their marriage. Among the delightful array of handmade crafts and art objects will be silver and beaded jewelry, hand-crafted papers and cards, candles, holiday ornaments for mantel and tree, wreaths of wildflowers and berries, pottery, hand-knit sweaters and scarves, clocks, table runners, intricately stitched fabric purses, and fused brown glass. , 160 South St. in Litchfield presents Songs of the Sea, paintings by ANDREW D. SEWELL through December 27. Drawn to the sea and the coast by his admiration for sailors, naval architects and artisans, Andrew Sewell studied boat building in Lubec, ME and has gone on to a career in boat and yacht design, building and repair around Boston and Gloucester. His paintings celebrate his love of boats and the sea as well as Gloucester's artistic tradition. The Moviehouse Studio Gallery

, Main St. (Route 44) in Millerton presents NEW YORK ACCORDING TO BENDIS, a representative selection of Keith Bendis’s career as a cartoon illustrator for newspaper and magazines through January 9. Mr. Bendis has been a freelance illustrator for 27 years. His unique and evocative drawings have appeared regularly in many of America’s prestigious publications, including his weekly cartoon feature in the Sunday Daily News, of which this show is comprised. Artwell Gallery

, 19 Water St. in Torrington presents an exhibition by M.G. MARTIN through the end of February. Martin will show collages, drawings and prints that deal with biomorphic and organic forms using repetition, locked together shapes, bi-lateral symmetry, and sensuous color or strong black and white. She is the recipient of a Fulbright grant in painting, an artist’s grant at the Vermont Studio School, and an art fellowship at Skidmore College. She had a long career as art teacher and arts administrator at Westover School in Middlebury, and also taught art at Manhattanville College and the Hartford Art School. presents a series of HOLIDAY READINGS by Richard Nunley on Friday, December 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Room of Old Parish Church, on the green in Sheffield. Nunley, a well-known Berkshire County writer, offers a historical review of Thanksgiving and Christmas from the 17th to the 20th century, with an emphasis on writers from New England, especially Berkshire County; among the authors whose words will be brought to life are Harriet Beecher Stowe, Samuel Sewall, Frederick Vanderbilt Fields and Herman Melville. , 7 Whittlesey Ave. in New Milford (just off the green) hosts Palestinian peace activist George Rishmawi speaking on "THE NON-VIOLENT INTIFADA: The Only Hope for Peace in the Holy Land" on Sunday, December 15 at 7 p.m. in the Cobbett Parish Hall, behind the church. The talk will include recommendations for specific action that individuals may take to help bring peace in the Middle East. A native of Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem, Rishmawi is the coordinator of the non-profit Holy Land Trust’s Travel and Encounter Program. The Holy Land Trust seeks to strengthen the lives of children, families and communities in Palestine through a wide variety of programs including economic development and sustainability, peace and reconciliation; in addition to these programs, the Trust also works to raise international awareness about present conditions in Palestine through unique religious and political encounters for travelers to the area. During "Finding the Winter Green" from 10-11:30 a.m., children will learn about evergreen plants and who eats them, and then go out searching and collecting to make rubbings and a specimen booklet; dress for the outdoors.
