Music and Dance

Norfolk Library, Route 44 in Norfolk presents pianist PAUL BISACCIA on Saturday, November 30 at 2 p.m. Paul Bisaccia is a charismatic performer whose highly accessible programs appeal to a wide audience around the country and around the world. His public television special has been seen by millions, and his playing was featured in the Ric Burns PBS series "New York." Although Mr. Bisaccia has made a particular specialty of the music of George Gershwin, his repertoire and musical interests are wide-ranging and include performances devoted to Chopin, Liszt and Beethoven. The Warner Theatre, 68 Main St. in Torrington presents country artist JO DEE MESSINA on Saturday, November 30 at 8 p.m. Fresh from an arena tour and an appearance on "Touched by an Angel," Messina’s stop at the Warner is a rare, intimate treat packed with a sleigh full of Christmas songs from her latest CD, "A Joyful Noise," along with a special selection of her best-known hits. With holiday classics like "Let It Snow," "Silver Bells," "I’ll Be Home for Christmas" and "Silent Night," this show is a festive delight for the whole family. Berkshire Museum, 39 South St. in Pittsfield presents VOICES OF WINTER featuring Priscilla Herdman, Anne Hills and Cindy Mangsen on Saturday, November 30 at 8 p.m. Three of the most celebrated voices in contemporary folk music come together to create what the Boston Globe called a "genuine folk super-group." Falls Village-Canaan Historical Society presents its annual LESSONS AND CAROLS program on Sunday, December 1 at 5 p.m. at the South Canaan Meetinghouse on Route 63 in Falls Village. Dr. Gregory J. Wismar will give the invocation and benediction. Readers will include Ian McCunn, Dorothy McCunn, Roland Chinatti, Julia Segalla, Bobby Riva, and Dr. David Sandefer. The North Canaan Folk Group will accompany the singing of familiar carols. Designer Robin Cockerline will provide festive decorations, and members of the Historical Society board will offer hot chocolate and cookies following the program. The public is invited to join their friends and neighbors for an old fashioned evening of singing in this historical setting.

 

Drama and Comedy

Kent Memorial Library, 32 North Main St. in Kent presents Mark Twain’s "THE DIARIES OF ADAM AND EVE" on Friday and Saturday, November 29-30 at 7 p.m. These performances by the Kent Community Players will be directed by Jane Farnol, with actors Sara Bouchard and David Stull. Clockwork Repertory Theatre, 133 Main St. in Oakville presents "ANYBODY FOR MURDER?" on Saturday, November 30 at 8:15 p.m. In this play by Brian Clemens and Dennis Spooner, Max is planning to murder his wife, Janet, collect her life insurance and enjoy life with his girlfriend. But old friends Mary and George arrive with the news that Mary and Janet are the recent beneficiaries of a huge fortune. Plans and plots hatch, and soon everyone is bent on murder! All that stands in the way is the presence of a neighbor who knows a thing or two about murder, crime writer Edgar Chambers. This thrilling mystery is by the writers of the television series "The Avengers." Seven Angels Theatre, located at Hamilton Park Pavilion on Plank Rd. in Waterbury presents Neil Simon's "RUMORS" through December 1, with performances on Thursdays and Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Four couples arrive at the home of New York's deputy mayor for a 10th wedding anniversary celebration, but the atmosphere is more frantic than festive when the host is found bleeding from an unsuccessful suicide attempt, the hostess is nowhere to be found and, as each new couple arrives, no one can remember who has been told what about whom. Doors slam, improbable injuries occur and confusion reigns as the couples get more and more crazed trying to sort things out. Tickets are $24-$38.50; for more info call 203-757-4676.

Thomaston Opera House, 158 Main St. in Thomaston presents "ALWAYS … PATSY CLINE" through December 1; performances will be held on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m., with an additional matinee on Saturday, November 30 at 2 p.m. This musical is based on the true story of singer Patsy Cline's friendship with a Houston housewife. TheaterWorks, 233 Pearl St. in Hartford presents "DINNER WITH FRIENDS" through December 22, with performances on Tuesday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Gabe and Karen, Beth and Tom are two Connecticut couples who have also been best friends for as long as any of them can remember. Married for 12 years, they planned on eating, drinking and parenting their way into old age together. But when Gabe and Karen host a dinner to try out some new recipes on their best friends, only one arrives bearing news that will test their friendship and even their marriage. This is the timeless tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, the heartless miser who discovers the true meaning of the holiday season after a Christmas Eve haunting. Featuring all of Charles Dickens’s well known characters (Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future), Michael Wilson’s adaptation is both a chilling ghost story and a heartwarming holiday event for the whole family. Washington Art Association, 4 Bryan Plaza in Washington Depot presents its annual HOLIDAY GIFT SALE from November 29 through December 24. Among the delightful array of handmade crafts and art objects will be silver and beaded jewelry, hand-crafted papers and cards, candles, holiday ornaments for mantel and tree, wreaths of wildflowers and berries, pottery, hand-knit sweaters and scarves, clocks, table runners, intricately stitched fabric purses, and fused brown glass. Hill-Stead Museum, 35 Mountain Rd. in Farmington exhibits dozens of decorative art objects, books, prints and photographs from the ALFRED ATMORE POPE COLLECTION along with the museum’s famed inventory of Impressionist paintings through January 5. Original Japanese wood block prints will also be brought out of storage for this annual holiday exhibition. Norfolk Library, Route 44 in Norfolk showcases the illustrative paintings of Norfolk’s KINUKO CRAFT during December and January. A major figure in contemporary American illustration, Kinuko will personally select paintings for this exhibit from her range of fantasy art, book jackets, poster designs and children’s books. The awards, clients and exhibits of Kinuko Craft are far too numerous to mention here, but suffice it to say that the Norfolk Library is proud and excited to present the work of this world-renowned artist. Lectures and Presentations

Institute for American Indian Studies, 38 Curtis Rd. in Washington hosts the LEAF ARROW STORYTELLERS on Saturday, November 30 at noon. Dressed in native clothing, Joe and Donna Cross will perform animated stories with dance and native songs. They are highly interactive with the audience, and will be sharing the tradition of the native people of Connecticut. The program will feature Quendolyn Quezaire-Presutti, who is known for her Native American and African American stories of her heritage that she makes come alive. Simsbury Public Library, 725 Hopmeadow St. in Simsbury presents DIANE SMITH—CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT on Sunday, December 1 at 3 p.m. Ms. Smith will share her experiences of discovering the wonderful ways in which people throughout the state celebrate the magic of Christmas, including excerpts from her recently published book, "Christmas in Connecticut." The book is a showcase of holiday activities, and includes a where-to appendix and seasonal recipes. Following the program, Ms. Smith’s book can be purchased and signed by the author. The Amistad Foundation hosts guest speaker HENRY LOUIS GATES, JR. at its annual meeting on Tuesday, December 3 at 5:30 p.m. at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford. Historian, cultural critic, author and editor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is the W.E.B. DuBois Professor of History of Humanities and the chair of the Afro-American Studies Department at Harvard University. As a literary sleuth and critic, Gates has found or rediscovered "lost" African American literature and made it accessible to a broad audience. A book signing of his most recent historical and literary find, "The Bondwoman’s Narrative," and a reception will follow his talk. "The Bondwoman’s Narrative" is the first known novel written by a black woman; Gates and others worked to authenticate the manuscript and to conclusively identify its author, Hannah Crafts, as a fugitive slave. Beardsley and Memorial Library, 40 Munro Place in Winsted presents HARRIET BEECHER STOWE AND HER IMPACT on Wednesday, December 4 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Katherine D. Kane, Director of the Harriet Beecher Stowe House, will describe its historic contents. She will talk on Stowe’s life and work to help inspire people to embrace a commitment to social justice, working toward positive change in their communities. Whether depicting Italian landscapes, children dancing or other celebrations of life, Lee’s paintings on canvas and silk coax viewers to open doors to their own hopes, mysteries and daydreams. Ms. Bruno will talk with writers about how to use hooks, gags, bullets, graphics and hotlinks to attract Internet audiences and draw them into prose and poetry. People’s Action for Clean Energy presents MISSION POSSIBLE—STOP NUCLEAR POWER on Thursday, December 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Watkinson School in Hartford. The evening will feature the presentation of awards to honor clean energy advocates, and a virtual world tour of solar sites presented by noted solar architect Steven Strong. Goshen Running Club sponsors the 25th anniversary GOSHEN TURKEY TROT RACE on Thursday, November 28 at 10 a.m.; registration starts at 8:30 a.m. The race, which will be held rain or shine, covers 6.2 miles of mostly dirt roads with plenty of hills thrown in for good measure. This event has a friendly, holiday ambiance with turkeys and homemade pies among the prizes awarded to the winners; the Laschever Memorial Cups will be given to the first male and female runners. Habitat for Humanity of Northwest CT sponsors a SKATING PARTY on Friday, November 29 from 1:15-3 p.m. at the Salisbury School’s indoor ice rink. Mothers Against Drunk Driving sponsors MADD ABOUT SANTA on Saturday, November 30 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall in New Milford. The event features a "Little Shoppers Corner" where children can shop for family and friends; children will be assisted with their shopping by our friendly elves. Gifts range in price from $.50-$5.00. While the children shop Mom and Dad can relax with a cup of coffee and something to eat; lunch and baked goods will be available. Litchfield County Association for Retarded Citizens holds its FESTIVAL OF TREES on Friday, November 29 from 6:30-8 p.m.; Saturday, November 30 from 3:30-5:30 p.m.; and Sunday, December 1 from 2-4 p.m. at the Warner Studio Theatre, 69 Main St. in Torrington. After time spent viewing the displays there, it’s on to the Governor’s Mansion to see that magnificent home decorated for the holidays. The tour ends at the Mattatuck Museum to view the spectacular treasures that are on display at its own Festival of the Trees and to enjoy a high tea in the Exhibition Café.
