The Last Taboo, Incontinence

The Last Taboo, Incontinence

Noble Horizons in Salisbury will host a lecture entitled "The Last Taboo, Incontinence" by Martha Klay on Friday, January 24 at 1 p.m. in the Life Long Learning Center in the Wagner building.

The subject of incontinence is not a "taboo" topic for Martha Klay, RN, MSN, APRN, as she has been helping women deal with women's issues for more than 25 years. She says, "As I aged so did the focus of my clients, and my work evolved to fill their needs. In my 20s, as a nurse, I was delivering babies; in my 30s, it was all about issues of fertility/ infertility. Approaching menopause was the topic for my 40s."

Today Ms. Klay's concentration is on the challenges of aging. Incontinence is one of the issues faced by 25% of women between the ages of 30-40, by 50% to 75% of those 50-60+ years old, and for the rest of us not something we want to think or talk about. But, says Ms. Klay, "It is treatable, it is curable. Many women suffer in silence, and feel as though they must make significant lifestyle changes and become depressed. It's time we talk about incontinence and the things we can do to make it and our lives better."

Dr. Peter Gott of Lakeville, who knows Martha Klay, said, "I am very aware of the work Martha Klay is doing in the area of urinary incontinence and would recommend this lecture as a starting point to take the discussion of incontinence off the list of taboo subjects."
