Free Diversity Training for Health and Human Service Workers

The Community Health & Wellness Center of Greater Torrington is sponsoring a free diversity training program with Dr. Julio Morales. "Building Cultural Competency, Providing Services to Latinos/as—A Case Study" will be offered on Friday, January 31 (snow date is February 7) from 9 a.m.-noon at the UConn Torrington Branch, 855 University Dr. in Torrington; registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and a continental breakfast is included.

Dr. Morales will explore the goal of improving access and lowering barriers to care, specifically in the Latino/a population. The training will address "cultural competency" and how it applies to various populations. Learn how the concept has been used to provide culturally competent HIV services to Latinos/as.

Dr. Morales has been a keynote speaker or presenter at more than 100 conferences or workshops. He is a Professor of Community Organization at the UConn School of Social Work and holds a BA from Hunter College of the City University of New York, a master’s in Social Work from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. from the Florence Heller Graduate School for Advanced Studies in Social Welfare at Brandeis University. Dr. Morales is the recipient of the Liberty Bell Award from the Hartford County Bar Association for initiating social change, and the Latino of the Year Award from the Connecticut Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission.
