Penguin Plunge at Lake Quassapaug

Penguin Plunge at Lake Quassapaug

Hundreds of daredevils are expected to brave the frigid waters of Lake Quassapaug in Middlebury during the 2nd annual Penguin Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Connecticut. The noon plunge on Saturday, February 15 will take place at Quassy Beach at Quassy Amusement Park on Route 64; registration starts at 10:30 a.m.

More than 100 persons jumped into the lake last February after soliciting pledges in support of Special Olympics. Similar plunges have been held in other regions of the state for more than 10 years. Organizers say the Penguin Plunge program has raised more than $500,000 for Special Olympics Connecticut's year-round programs of sports competitions and training.

With the record cold of recent weeks, Lake Quassapaug has been covered with a layer of ice. Last year the lake was open for the frigid swim. Participants, wearing only bathing suits and bow ties, are required to get soaked but do not have to stay in the water for any length of time. Awards will be presented to the oldest and youngest penguin, top fundraiser, best costume, largest school team, and largest law enforcement group. The person recruiting the most penguins will also be honored at the event.

Spectators are welcome to watch the plunge from the lake's shoreline. For more info or a pledge form, call Special Olympics Connecticut at 203-267-6566.
